What does 2-4-6 mean?
The number follows the projection label on the perfume card, not the bottle size or the concentration.
- 2 sprays for anything rated "fills a room, leaves a trail" or louder: sweet gourmands, heavy ambers, most Budget bottles built to be noticed. One on the chest, one on the neck.
- 4 sprays for anything rated "arm's length": most Designer bottles and most fresh scents. Chest, neck, one wrist, one behind an ear or on the forearm.
- 6 sprays only for a scent rated "stays close" or "a skin scent": light musks, single-material scents, most colognes. Six is not a lot of a scent that nobody smells past a hug.
If you do not know the rating, start at 2 and add one spray the next day. It is far easier to add than to take away.
Where should the sprays go?
Warm skin, uncovered. Neck, chest and the inside of the wrists carry a scent for hours, because warm skin keeps pushing it into the air. Behind the ears works for the same reason. Spray a hand's width from the skin, then leave it alone: rubbing the wrists together wipes off the opening and warms the skin, so the top notes go faster.

Does heat change the answer?
Yes. Warm skin speeds up evaporation, so the same sprays reach further and fade sooner. A bottle that sits at arm's length in January can fill a room in July.
So in summer, take one step down: 4 becomes 2, 6 becomes 4. In winter, a coat and cold air swallow projection, so a step up is fair for quiet scents. Heavy winter scents stay at 2.
Room size works the same way. In a car or a lift, whatever you sprayed is the whole air supply. Spray for the smallest room you will be in that day.
How many sprays for the office and the gym?

The gym goes the other way. You are hot and in a closed room with other people breathing hard. Heat amplifies whatever you sprayed, so the honest answer is one spray of something clean and fresh, or none. Fresh sweat plus a sweet gourmand is a smell nobody asked for.
Do more sprays mean more compliments?
No. Compliments come from the first hour and from projection, not from volume. In the first hour the top notes are bright and the scent is new to everyone around you. How do you know you overdid it?
You can still smell it on yourself an hour later. A scent worn properly needs a small sniff at the wrist by the afternoon. One you can smell while typing is too much.
People react before you speak: a step back, a window opened, a "wow, that's strong". If anyone mentions it from more than arm's length, take one spray off next time.
The room keeps it after you leave. Walk out, walk back in five minutes later, and if it hits you at the door, that is the trail everyone else got all day.
