4. Lattafa Liam

The alternative. A cup of cardamom tea with milk on a cold morning, a fig cut open on the saucer, a creamy sandalwood underneath that stays close. It rates as the same idea as Gris Charnel in our data and matches it for a full day at close range. What it loses is the vetiver dryness, so it turns sweeter by evening, and on some skins the sandalwood turns too sweet. For the office and everyday wear, if the tea and fig were the point.

5. Parfums de Marly Layton

The third pair, the gateway Niche. A green apple sliced over warm vanilla, with cardamom and pepper behind it. The lavender reads as menthol to a third of the room. It is a crowd-pleaser in our data and lasts a full day with strong projection. It has two clone links, the bottle below it among them, and it sits between the fresh end and the warm end of the season. 6. Al Haramain Détour Noir

The alternative. A slice of spiced apple pie next to vanilla ice cream, with a dab of menthol for the first ten minutes. It rates as the same idea as Layton in our data and matches it for a full day with strong projection on most skins. What it loses is the smoothness of the opening, which is harsher on a fresh bottle, and a little of the polish in the middle. It costs a fraction. 7. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540

What it loses is the airiness and the depth of the Extrait, and it goes nose-blind on many people, so ask a friend before re-spraying. The first minute smells synthetic. 9. Parfums de Marly Herod

The fifth pair, the smooth tobacco. A fresh bag of cherry pipe tobacco opened in a tailor's fitting room, with a vanilla underneath that never shouts. It stays close and reads as comfort rather than statement. It lasts a full day in our data, though on some skins it turns to a skin scent early, so spray clothes too. Its own dossier names the bottle below it as the cheaper version. For cold evenings, if Tobacco Vanille is too loud and Niche money is fine.

10. Al Haramain Haramain Amber Oud Tobacco Edition

The alternative, by consensus rather than by clone link. A baklava shop that also sells pipe tobacco, clove smoke drifting in from the back. It is warm, heavy and sweet, with less tobacco than the name promises. It is the Budget version of the sweet-tobacco idea and it lasts a full day and fills a room from two or three sprays. What it loses is the tobacco leaf itself, which reads as honey and clove here. For cold evenings, if you want the idea for a fraction.

11. Xerjoff Naxos

The sixth pair, the honey Niche. A Sicilian pastry shop that also sells cigars: honey and lavender first, tobacco leaf behind the counter, a cashmere softness over it all. It is the most rated Niche bottle for the season in our data. The opening is rough for twenty minutes, then it shines and lasts twelve hours and more. The threads pair it with the Le Mâle line below it for the lavender-vanilla lane. For dates and nights out, if you already know you like lavender.

12. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Mâle

The alternative, at Designer, and the Designer pick. Cardamom and a powdered iris over a warm vanilla, the lavender of the 1995 original turned down to a hum. It is the same cardamom-lavender-vanilla lane as Naxos without the honey and tobacco, smoother and less sweet. It lasts a full day and fills a room from two sprays, and it is a crowd-pleaser in our data. For dates, formal evenings and nights out, if Naxos is too much honey for the price you would pay.

13. Amouage Interlude Man

The seventh pair, the smoky Niche. A black dragon asleep in a pine wood next to a fire at night: dried oregano, incense smoke, hot resin and a leather-oud floor. One spray lasts all night and fills a room, the loudest projection rating we track. It is polarising in our data, a legend to half the threads and a headache to the other half. The bottle below it is the smoke lane at Budget. For special occasions once fall has turned cold, if you want the biggest bottle.

14. Lattafa Raghba Wood Intense

The alternative, the smoke lane for pocket money. An oak barrel that used to hold dark rum, set on fire, with a marshmallow toasting over it. It is the same lane as Interlude Man rather than a copy: burnt sugar, guaiac and frankincense where Amouage has oregano and resin. One spray lasts a day and fills a room in our data. It is an acquired taste, choking to some noses. For cold nights, if you want smoke without Niche money and will spray once and no more.

15. Serge Lutens Chergui

The eighth pair, the dry tobacco. A hot wind over cut hay, dark honey open on a wooden table, pipe tobacco in a drawer. A little iris powder sits over it. It is warm without being a dessert, and it lasts a full day at moderate projection. Its own dossier pairs it with the Designer bottle below it as the sweeter version. The powder reads as old on some skins. For formal evenings and cold nights, if you want tobacco with hay instead of sugar.

16. Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille

The alternative, at Designer, and the one to end on. An old tobacconist's shop where someone is baking gingerbread in the back: pipe tobacco, vanilla, dried fruit and a little cocoa. It is the same tobacco lane as Chergui with the vanilla put back and the volume turned up. It is sweeter, louder and heavier, and it belongs to the cold end of the season.
