Is Ambroxan the same as ambergris?

No. Ambergris is a natural material from sperm whales, rare and expensive. Ambroxan is a synthetic made to give the same salty, warm, long-lasting effect, and it is what almost every modern bottle that says ambergris actually uses. Baccarat Rouge 540 lists both and is built on the synthetic.

Why can't I smell Ambroxan?

Because a share of people are partly or fully anosmic to it, the same way some cannot smell certain musks. On those people Molecule 02 smells of almost nothing for half an hour and Sauvage smells of pepper and then nothing. Other people around you still smell it.
